Course Name: Forging
Prerequisites: Enrolled in or successful completion of Farrier Craftsmanship II
Students will gain knowledge in the proper use and maintenance of forging tools. The class will cover basic forging operations and hammer control. Students will learn to shape keg shoes and keg shoe modifications, make handmade plain stamped shoes, make handmade fullered shoes, forge welding bar shoes, and make handmade tools.
Each week will include one day of theory and three days of practice. Using the horses from the school program will enable students to see the relationship between theory and practice. Theory will be based on the level of student progression using the text, Gregory's Textbook of Farriery by C. Gregory. The weekly content categories include:
Week 1: Safety and introduction to forging. Forging tools: proper use and maintenance.
Week 2: Basic forging operations and hammer control. Forging exercises.
Week 3-4: Shaping keg shoes and keg shoe modifications.
Week 5-6: Handmade plain stamped shoes.
Week 7-8: Handmade fullered shoes.
Week 9-10: Forge welding bar shoes.
Week 11: Handmade tools.
Week 12: Review and Final Exam.
Following successful completion of Forging, the student will be able to:
- Have an understanding of introductory topics on forging including: safety, tools, tool maintenance
- Have basic forging operation skills including: shearing, drawing, upsetting, shouldering, spreading, punching, welding
- Successfully complete forging exercises including: making a hoof pick, making a gate hook, making a hammer wedge
- Successfully complete Keg Shoe modifications including: shaping, clips, Rocket Toe, Rolled Toe, Square Toe, Extension Toe, Trailer, Extended Heels, Heel Caulks, Swelled Heels
- Successfully create handmade shoes including: plain stamped, fullered, forging weld bar shoes
- Successfully create handmade tools including: tongs, clinch block, punches
The instructor will use a variety of teaching methods including: expository learning, discussion, demonstration, and guided practice. Students will have extensive hands-on instruction.
Students will be evaluated on their knowledge and skills through teacher made tests - quizzes, mid-term test, and final exam - as well as student participation. Formative assessment and immediate feedback during lab activities will be used to guide the teaching / learning process and will allow students to monitor their progress throughout the course.
