Course Name: Farrier Craftsmanship V

Prerequisites: Successful Completion of Farrier Craftsmanship IV

Description:
In Farrier Craftsmanship V students continue shoeing, developing good shoeing strategies and establishing a routine in the shoe shaping, leveling and fitting tasks. Students also continue to work on their knowledge of farrier science and their Horsemanship skills. Tools and different designs are studied and new products are discussed and evaluated.

Weekly Topics:
Each week will include one day of theory and three days of practice. Using the horses from the school program will enable students to see the relationship between theory and practice. Theory will be based on the level of student progression using the text, Gregory's Textbook of Farriery by C. Gregory. The weekly content categories include:

Week 1-3: Review of content from Farrier Craftsmanship IV, as needed; continuation of forging techniques
Week 4: Business Issues and Strategies
Week 5-6: Foal Foot Care
Week 7-8: Practical Approach to Diagnosis of Lameness
Week 9-11: Forging Techniques and Practical Application
Week 12: Review and Final Exams

Performance Objectives:
Following successful completion of Farrier Craftsmanship V, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a an understanding of more advanced concepts and principles of horseshoeing under ideal conditions
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the concepts and practices from Farrier Craftsmanship IV: different types & classifications of shoes; shoeing for performance horses, and advanced forging techniques
  • Demonstrate an understanding of principles of business and strategies for establishing a successful business
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform routine horse shoeing, including foal foot care
  • Explain a practical approach to the diagnosis of lameness
  • Describe appropriate approaches to the maintenance of school horses
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the following advanced concepts and describe their implications for the work of the farrier: advanced forging techniques, balance and movement of the horse, business related concepts, & professionalism

Methods:
In order for students to acquire the knowledge and skills of Farrier Craftsmanship V, the instructor will use a variety of teaching methods including: expository learning, discussion, demonstration, & guided practice. Students will have extensive hands-on instruction using the 100+ horses that are involved in the school program.

Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on their knowledge and skills through teacher made tests, quizzes, mid-term test, and final exam - as well as student participation (horse handling and workmanship). Formative assessment and immediate feedback during lab activities will be used to guide the teaching/learning process and will allow students to monitor their progress throughout the course.


I will never forget the ability Ron Meredith had to get inside a horse's head to understand the reasons for the horse's response to stimuli. I learned things at Meredith Manor that have carried me through an entire lifetime career with horses and ponies.
